How far is the drive from LA to San Diego

How far is the drive from LA to San Diego?
I will be vacationing in L.A. in two weeks and wanted to drive down and visit San Diego while I was there. I was just wondering how long it REALLY takes to drive there and back? Or should I plan on staying overnight there and just catching a flight from there back home. I heard the traffic is REALLY BAD out there!

It really depends on the day/time of day or night. Later night driving (after 8pm and before 5am on weekdays aren't bad.) From LA to San Diego, the drive is approximately 116 miles (a 2 hour drive,) but in heavy traffic it can become a 3-5 hour drive. Pick your day/time wisely and it shouldn't be too bad. If you really want to enjoy San DIego, spend a couple of days and fly out from there.

I live in Los Angeles. I just got back from San Diego - spent the NYE weekend there. I always use Amtrak to go to San Diego (www.amtrak.com). It goes up against the shoreline for the last hour from L.A. to San Diego - very pretty ride! San Diego has a very good public transportation system once you get there from the Amtrak. Good luck.

The traffic in Los Angeles is BAD if you don't schedule your time right. But honestly I've seen WORSE!! Miami is HORRID!! The time it will take will depend on your travel times and where you are starting in LA (remember there is about 50 miles from one end of LA to the other. As long as you aren't driving during rush hour you should be ok: Weekdays = 7am -9:30am and 3pm - 7:30 Weekends usually aren't bad in Los Angeles but weekend afternoons are bad getting in & out of LA.

It all depends on when you drive to and from San Diego and what part of LA you're coming from. If you leave at 10:45 and you're in the heart of LA, you should easily be able to make it San Diego by 1. If you decide to go at rush hour, it could take 4 - 5 hours. The total drive is 100 - 130 miles.

Anywhere from 2 hours min to 4 hrs, it all depends on the traffic, the time of day you are traveling and what freeway you take leaving LA. Try avoid the 405 at all costs. Suggest to take the 57 to the 5 and take the 5 all the way. Plus if you can take advantage of the Carpool Lane it would be much better. When you're leaving San Diego for LA leave no later than 2pm or after 6pm.
