Flying from San Diego to London, with a stop in SFO. Am I clearing customs in SD or SFO?
The stop in San Francisco is for a "plane change". The flight number does not change. I'm trying to avoid connections, because they've been so tight, there's no way I'd make it what with customs and luggage and everything. Can you tell it's my first time flying internationally? I don't know the protocol! :) Anyway, any tips on what I should expect when flying out and then back from London would also be helpful. Thanks!

SFO, your luggage should be sent through to SD. Customs as soon as you land. You shouldnt have to deal with luggage.
2 :
Customs will be in London. You are in the US. You don't go Through customs/immigration until you enter a foreign country.
3 :
It is usually your first stop in USA,,,, although you will still clear customs in your final destinaton due to that's where they'll find out where you're goin and if you have any goodies in your checked luggage that you're not suppose to be bringin into the US.
4 :
Exactly -- when you fly from the U.S., your luggage is checked all the way through to your final destination. That means you'll check everything in San Diego and won't see it again until you pull it off the baggage carousel at Heathrow (or Gatwick, if that's where you're landing!) As for your short stop in San Francisco, you'll likely just get off the plane, stretch your legs, and get back on to the next plane. Once you get to London, however, you'll go through Immigration first (walk quickly once you're off the plane -- those lines build up fast and you want to be among the first to get through!), and then into the Baggage Hall, where you'll pick up your bags from the carousel. After that, it's a straight walk through the green "Nothing to Declare" channel at Customs -- 95% of the time, I'm not stopped, I just walk through -- and into the Arrivals Hall, where you'll be met by whoever's meeting you (or you can take public transport into London.) On the way back, however, if you're changing planes in the US again, you'll need to pick your luggage up as soon as you get to the US and RE-CHECK it between flights. This means that if you're flying from London to San Diego with a stop in San Francisco again, you'll check your bags in London, then pick them up from the baggage carousel in San Francisco, pass through Customs, and then recheck them onto your flight to San Diego. Other things to remember when flying back from London: if you're going from Heathrow, leave PLENTY of time between arriving at the airport and when your flight departs -- crowds at Heathrow are just horrific these days, and you can easily wait for 45 minutes in the security line (been there, done that!) Also remember that you're only allowed ONE carry-on bag when you're flying from London, regardless of which carrier you're flying or where you're flying to, and they're pretty strict about it. I've certainly had to stuff my laptop bag into my carry-on bag before, just to meet the guidelines. Rules about liquids are fairly similar to the ones in the US -- they must be in bottles no bigger than 3oz (or 100ml), and they must be in a plastic Ziplock bag. Other than that, remember to wear something comfortable, sleep as much as you can, refrain from alcohol on the plane, drink tons of water, bring a good book, and relax! You'll have a wonderful time -- good luck and safe flying! --Holly
5 :
You will not have to collect your luggage since it will be transferred to your second flight. As soon as you land in London you will go to Customs and then collect your bags
6 :
On the way there you will clear customs in London, on the way back ask the flight attendant you will probably clear customs in SD but you might be able to do it in SFO

How far is the drive from LA to San Diego
How far is the drive from LA to San Diego?
I will be vacationing in L.A. in two weeks and wanted to drive down and visit San Diego while I was there. I was just wondering how long it REALLY takes to drive there and back? Or should I plan on staying overnight there and just catching a flight from there back home. I heard the traffic is REALLY BAD out there!

It really depends on the day/time of day or night. Later night driving (after 8pm and before 5am on weekdays aren't bad.) From LA to San Diego, the drive is approximately 116 miles (a 2 hour drive,) but in heavy traffic it can become a 3-5 hour drive. Pick your day/time wisely and it shouldn't be too bad. If you really want to enjoy San DIego, spend a couple of days and fly out from there.

I live in Los Angeles. I just got back from San Diego - spent the NYE weekend there. I always use Amtrak to go to San Diego (www.amtrak.com). It goes up against the shoreline for the last hour from L.A. to San Diego - very pretty ride! San Diego has a very good public transportation system once you get there from the Amtrak. Good luck.

The traffic in Los Angeles is BAD if you don't schedule your time right. But honestly I've seen WORSE!! Miami is HORRID!! The time it will take will depend on your travel times and where you are starting in LA (remember there is about 50 miles from one end of LA to the other. As long as you aren't driving during rush hour you should be ok: Weekdays = 7am -9:30am and 3pm - 7:30 Weekends usually aren't bad in Los Angeles but weekend afternoons are bad getting in & out of LA.
4 :
It all depends on when you drive to and from San Diego and what part of LA you're coming from. If you leave at 10:45 and you're in the heart of LA, you should easily be able to make it San Diego by 1. If you decide to go at rush hour, it could take 4 - 5 hours. The total drive is 100 - 130 miles.

Anywhere from 2 hours min to 4 hrs, it all depends on the traffic, the time of day you are traveling and what freeway you take leaving LA. Try avoid the 405 at all costs. Suggest to take the 57 to the 5 and take the 5 all the way. Plus if you can take advantage of the Carpool Lane it would be much better. When you're leaving San Diego for LA leave no later than 2pm or after 6pm.

Its a 2hour dive.. 1hour 30mins if your a speeder like me! lol.

Some good eateries in San Diego by the airport
Some good eateries in San Diego by the airport?
What are some good eateries that are within walking distance of the San Diego International airport; preferably by the beach as well. (I fly free, I just wanted to grab lunch in San Diego with a nice scenery in mind that is within walking distance of the airport for my next flight. I don't want to rent a taxi.)

You won't find anything within walking distance of the airport. If you have to stay in the airport, your best bet is to just eat inside the airport before leaving your terminal gate. If you were taking a taxi, you could get to Anthony's Fish Grotto, which is right on the water and only 2-3 miles from the airport. Its at 1360 North Harbor Drive San Diego, CA 92101.

theres really not much within walking distance of the airport, simply because its on a strip. i would suggest eating in the airport. depending where your gate is, theres a few things. some starbucks, some mcdonalds, little side stores. theres a brewery by southwest that has come good nachos.
4 :
Within walking distance from the airport is Island Prime/C-Level which is a great restaurant with views of downtown San Diego and the Coronado Bridge. A very short walk just across the street from the airport.
5 :
There are a couple of restaurants in the Sheraton Hotel & Marina on the water across the street from the airport. If you're willing to reconsider and take a five minute cab ride, you might try one of the many restaurants in Seaport Village.
