The San diego flight already has a stop over in LAX. but if I start in LAX it's about $40 more. Y?

Airlines use a complex method to set the prices for flight segments and it's fairly common to see the longer journey costing less than the shorter, even if the shorter journey is part of the longer. Many times this is done to help ensure they do not sell so many seats on the shorter journey that they have to turn away folks for the longer trip. In other words, they would rather sell the ticket to someone travelling from San Diego-Hawaii than someone travelling from LA-Hawaii even if the San Diego passenger has to go through LA on their way. This could be because the overall demand for San Diego-Hawaii is much higher, or because there is a competitor airline flying the same route and the airline wants to draw business away from the competitor. For what it's worth, if you buy the ticket from San Diego and try to skip the San Diego-LA portion, they will count you as a no-show and cancel your entire ticket. But if you miss on the way back, and get off the plane in LA and don't continue on, this is just fine as long as you don't expect any kind of refund, and as long as you don't make it a habit.
