There are several places near you that have sport pilot training. There are also a couple of resources you should use before you even start training. The EAA (experimental aircraft associations) Sport Pilot site http://www.sportpilot.org and the AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots association) Learn to Fly site http://www.aopa.org/learntofly/index.html Both have extensive resources to help you on your trek. Both have lists of instructors and schools in your area as well. http://www.aopa.org/letsgoflying/ready/choose/cfisearch.cfm?WT.mc_id=T10930AWL http://www.sportpilot.org/instructors/california_1.html Those should help you find one near you.

If I we're down in the San Diego area, I think I'd go out to El Cajon for the less congested airspace and lower prices. Here is a list of instructors in S. Cal. who instruct for the Sport Pilot license: http://www.sportpilot.org/instructors/california_1.html

I'd like to suggest that you try Warner Springs. Their ;pilots actually seem to be competent. Unlike some of the other "in town" training programs.
