www.kayak.com lets you compare about 5 different travel programs for the cheapest flight. I use it to book all my trips! Also, since you're booking last minute, you should try www.lastminutedeals.com. They don't always have the dates and times you need, but you can occasionally find a great deal if you get lucky.

If you can get a flight for around $700, you should buy it asap if you can afford it. You're not going to find anything cheaper that time of year.
2 :
This trip is about 6000 miles, each way. So, if you're talking about $700 for a one-way trip, that's about 11.7 cents per mile. Airlines measure their cost in "CASM", which is how much it costs them to fly the plane, per seat, per mile. Delta's CASM for last quarter, for instance, was 12.72 cents. So in other words, it's quite likely that if you buy that ticket, the airline will not even make any profit from that. Therefore you really can't expect prices to go *lower*. So if you can afford it, buy it. If you can't afford it, sorry, but you're not going to find anything cheaper.

The flight will be 5 to 5 and a half hours. On the return you will catch a tail wind that will shorten the flight by about a half hour. The drive from San Diego to Palm Springs is about 4 and a half to five hours depending on traffic and the route you take. Is it necessary to fly in to San Diego? If you fly in to John Wayne Airport (Orange County) you can be in PS in 2 hours, but the flight time will be about the same.

You need government issued ID. A passport or a your green card will do fine.
2 :
Any one of: A driver's license A state issued non-driver ID card Passport Those would each be sufficient. A social security card is useless for that purpose. A green card would also work. This is the official list of acceptable ID: = = = = = = = * U.S. passport * U.S. passport card * DHS "Trusted Traveler" cards (NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST) * U.S. Military ID (active duty or retired military and their dependents, and DOD civilians) * Permanent Resident Card * Border Crossing Card * DHS-designated enhanced driver's license * Drivers Licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent) that meets REAL ID benchmarks (All states are currently in compliance) * A Native American Tribal Photo ID * An airline or airport-issued ID (if issued under a TSA-approved security plan) * A foreign government-issued passport * Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) card * Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Non-US/Canadian citizens are not required to carry their passports if they have documents issued by the U.S. government such as Permanent Resident Cards. Those who do not should be carrying their passports while visiting the U.S.
